Beers add froth and bubble to camel rides

A beer on Cable Beach after a sunset camel ride may sound like a dream for many tourists but will now be a reality.

Shire of Broome councillors unanimously passed a motion at an ordinary meeting last fortnight to allow all three camel operators to serve one complimentary alcoholic beverage to customers at the end of their ride.

The change came about after Sundowner Camel Tours owner Steve Madden wrote to the Shire last month, requesting it alter his commercial permit to allow a drink after each tour.

“Please note that only one alcoholic beverage would be provided to each patron only of legal age and only after the tour is over,” he said.

“Customers would be encouraged to put the empty bottles or cans in a bin provided and removed.”

In its report, Shire officers said the provision of the beverage was in line with all other service restrictions related to liquor service in WA and was “not considered to have a negative impact upon the surrounding businesses that supply alcohol.”

“It is considered that by providing this service, tour operators would meet the expectations of customers and improve upon their tourism product,” the document said.

Under the motion passed, the trading licence for Broome Camels and Red Sun Camels, the only other camel operators on Cable Beach, were also amended to duplicate the change.

Shire officers said this would ensure the remaining operators were “not disadvantaged in any way.”

Mr Madden said he was optimistic the change would improve the visitor experience. “Quite often I had people asking about a cold, alcoholic drink to watch the sun go down and that was happening for decades,” he said.

“This will add to our product and heighten the overall experience — they’re already having an exotic experience riding an animal on the beach and now it can add a nice touch afterwards that they can enjoy a drink on the best beach in the world.

“It is really nice to see the Shire of Broome proactive in assisting us tour operators.”
