Beach clean-up champions ignored their weather apps on Sunday to join an effort to pull almost 100kg of rubbish off Binningup Beach.

The annual clean-up organised by Binningup Coastcare Environment Group in association with Tangaroa Blue saw 31 volunteers brave the wind and rain to help remove 99.6kg of rubbish.

With teams covering the north and south of the beach, volunteers found 3259 pieces of marine debris with balloons, bottles and bundles of rope just some of the rubbish collected.

Rope, plastic and fishing gear were among the most commonly collected rubbish with volunteers ferrying full bags up and down the beach in 4x4s as small teams of volunteers scrambled across the shore.

In a subsequent social media post, BCEG thanked Pete’s Chop Shop for supplying the volunteers with a free sausage sizzle and the Shire of Harvey for handling the collected waste.

“The amazing effort from all the volunteers on the day has once again made this event a great success,” they said.

“A massive thank you to everyone involved and we hope to see you all again next year.”
