Police have issued an appeal for information after approximately 5,500 sheep worth almost $2 million were stolen from a rural Queensland property.

Detectives from the Rural and Stock Crime Squad say thousands of dorper ewes and rams were stolen from a property outside of Blackall in central Queensland, on the Isisford-Blackall road.

The missing sheep are worth approximately $1.7 million, according to detectives, who say the theft occurred between February and May this year.

“Investigators are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who observed suspicious stock movements, livestock transport activity, or other unusual behaviour in the area,” a Queensland Police statement said.

The sheep have been marked with white National Livestock Identification tags.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Elliot says the theft has had a “devastating impact” on the farmers involved.

“Livestock theft can result in substantial financial losses and place additional pressure on farming businesses already facing challenging conditions,” Detective Senior Sergeant Elliot said.

“Livestock theft investigations can be complex, often spanning large geographical areas, which is why we work closely with producers, saleyards, transport operators and industry stakeholders to identify offenders and disrupt criminal activity.

“We encourage anyone with information about this theft, or any suspicious activity involving livestock, to come forward and contact police.”

Any person with information is urged to contact the Rural and Stock Crime Squad in Longreach on 07 4652 5209, or contact Crime Stoppers on on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersqld.com.au.
