The Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA have issued a HAZMAT general warning for Gap Ridge and Maitland after a gas leak near the intersection of Coral Farm Road and Dampier Road.
A number of roads have been closed including Coral Farm and Millars Road and firefighters are at the scene.
A 1km exclusion zone is in place, with fears the gas leak may result in potentially dangerous fumes blowing towards Gap Ridge and surrounding areas.
People in the area should remain inside, out of the smoke or fumes, with doors and windows closed, with air conditioners switched off if driving. DFES has also advised locals not to use matches, cigarette lighters or naked flames in the area.
Dampier Highway and Karratha Airport remain open, with locals asked to exercise caution while driving and follow all directions from emergency services and traffic management personnel.
People with medical concerns should contact their local doctor or call 1800MEDICARE.
