The City of Karratha is urging residents to take part in shaping their community as the 2025 local government election approaches.

With five council seats up for grabs, eligible residents are being encouraged to check their enrolment details, consider nominating for the council, and prepare to cast their votes in October.

Nominations will open on August 28 and close at 4pm on September 4, with election day set as October 18.

City of Karratha mayor Daniel Scott said nominating for the council was a chance to take an active role in the city’s future.

“Serving on council is a chance to make a real difference for the community. By being on council you are doing the people’s work and actively making a change,” he said.

“Councillors are the voice of the community, working together to plan for growth, protect our lifestyle, and ensure our region continues to be a great place to live, work and invest.”

Cr Scott also stressed the importance of voter participation, noting voter turnout in local elections was historically low.

“Local government elections generally have a voter turnout of 25 per cent,” he said.

“This means only one in four people are voting for who they want representing them at the council table.

“Local government plays a massive role in our community, from maintaining parks, roads and recreational facilities to delivering events and programs, supporting local businesses, and advocating to State and Federal Government on critical issues like housing, healthcare and regional investment.

“Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for the voting packs to be in your mailbox. Information on where to drop off completed packs will be on our website and Facebook page.”

This year’s election will also bring in a change in council structure, with the number of elected members reduced from 10 to nine, in line with the State Government’s local government reform measures.
