A fire has ripped through a building south of Perth early Monday morning, with the arson squad investigating the cause of the blaze.

Firefighters were called to the scene just after 2.15am, when the blaze took hold in at the Freshman Barber Shop in Rockingham.

Large flames and heavy smoke were coming from the building along Railway Terrace and Harrison Street, and it took 20 minutes for firefighters to get the fire under control.

Five fire trucks attended the structure fire, which has extensively damaged the building.

The fire was contained to the one building but surrounding businesses, including a BWS and nail salon, had water damage.
