For the first time, a southern Wheatbelt bowling club is gearing up for twilight and night competitions for the upcoming 2025-26 summer season after a huge lighting upgrade.

Wagin Bowling Club is shining bright following the $70,000 installation of 200 lux illumination lights for its main green to meet WA competition standard, providing more local and Statewide bowling tournament opportunities.

The club pitched in $20,000 themselves, with the Shire of Wagin contributing $35,000 from the recreation development reserve and State Government invested $15,000 through the club night lights program to help the project come to light.

The night lights program partnership led to a doubling of the lighting quality initially planned.

Shire of Wagin president Phillip Blight said the upgrade is a wonderful chance for the small-town club to widen their scope of possibilities in the sport.

“This is a fantastic outcome for our community that enables bowls to be enjoyed during the cooler evening hours of summer,” he said.

“It’s a great example of a local sporting group investing in its own future by working with the shire and the WA Government.”

Cr Blight said the Wagin Bowling Club continues to be a vibrant sporting hub that builds social connection, and the improved lighting ensures a top-tier facility for years to come.
