Narrogin Senior High School Year 9 students embark on Canberra and Sydney tour for unique hands-on education

Narrogin Senior High School students embarked on the “trip of a lifetime” last month, receiving first-hand education in government, Australian history and national treasures on the annual Canberra/Sydney tour. From August 16-23, 40 Year 9 students chaperoned by four teachers explored a handful of the nation’s most significant cultural, scientific and historical institutions. Questacon, the Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, the National Gallery, the Australian Institute of Sport, and the Royal Australian Mint were all notable Canberra landmarks the students visited. The itinerary also featured skiing at Perisher’s Blue Cow, stargazing at Mount Stromlo Observatory, and a ferry tour of Sydney Harbour, as well as visits to Taronga Zoo, the Sydney Opera House, the Sea Life Aquarium, Madame Tussauds, and Cockatoo Island. Student events and workplace learning co-ordinator Londa Finlayson described the tour as a “prestigious opportunity that combines educational enrichment with personal growth”. “The students see the national organisations that house all of the Australian history, information, archives, treasures, traditions and landmarks,” she said. “They understand the foundations of Australia through the lens of Canberra. “These students experience a trip of a lifetime that opens their eyes to a whole new world, travel and exploration in an educational way.” Ms Finlayson said every aspect was a highlight and a new revelatory experience. “For many students it was their first time on a plane, navigating public transport, attending the theatre, or even mastering the challenge of packing a suitcase under the airline weight limit,” she said. “These firsts provided valuable life lessons alongside the remarkable learning opportunities. “The kids enjoyed all elements, snow in Perisher Valley, Sydney Opera House, sailing in Darling Harbour under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Parliament House, but one of the most profound places was the Australian War Memorial. “They all came back with fresh outlooks and were so grateful and such respectful students.” She urged students to put their hand up for future trips. “The tour is a proud reminder of the school’s commitment to providing outstanding educational opportunities while preparing students to thrive as future leaders and citizens,” Ms Finlayson said.
