NAIDOC Week kicks off in Geraldton with community events centred around connection, culture and NAIDOC pride

NAIDOC Week 2025 got off to a vibrant start in Geraldton with two community celebrations that honoured culture, connection and 50 years of NAIDOC pride.
Grey skies couldn’t dampen the spirit at Stow Gardens on Sunday, where a free opening concert, hosted by Lennel Papertalk and Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service, brought locals together for an afternoon of music, crafts and culture.
South Australian rock legends Coloured Stone, best known for their 1984 anthem Black Boy, headlined the event alongside local performers, with food vans and activities making it a fun, family-friendly afternoon.
Last week, Waggrakine Primary School held its annual NAIDOC Cook Up Day, welcoming families, students, elders and local service providers for a celebration steeped in tradition.
The scent of roo stew and damper filled the air around a communal fire, where stories were shared and cultural knowledge passed on.
The day offered hands-on learning and heartfelt reflection, with elders and staff praising the growing strength of the event each year.
As NAIDOC Week continues, GRAMS will host a series of events including a community breakfast, awards night and a ball.
