Mid West GPs recognised by Royal Australian College of General Practitioners WA

A Mid West doctor and Gascoyne GP practice have been honoured by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners WA for their outstanding contribution to the profession.
Dr Richard Taylor, who has worked in the Mid West for more than a decade, was presented with the WA Faculty Legend Award at the ceremony in December. The award acknowledges his work as a trusted voice in the Geraldton community and his advocacy for rural healthcare.
His leadership was highlighted, as the chair of the Midwest GP Network and his work as a medical educator with RACGP.
Carnarvon Medical Centre, led by Dr Kornelis Bakker, won the general practice of the year award. The clinic was recognised for its multidisciplinary care and commitment to registrar training.
Their team includes a range of medical professionals and allied health staff, and doctors at the medical centre assist with the local hospital’s on-call accident and emergency roster.
The Statewide awards honour a variety of health workers for their contribution to general practice.
RACGP WA chair Dr Ramya Raman spoke highly of the commitment and dedication shown by GPs in WA and said that the award winners included senior leaders, educators and rural advocates.
“Each recipient embodies the values of service, compassion, and excellence that define general practice,” she said.
Dr Taylor was also recently awarded general practitioner of the year at the 2026 WA Rural Health Excellence Awards for his work at St John of God Geraldton Hospital.
