Allen Griechen named inaugural recipient of WA match MVP medal at men’s and mixed national championships

Geraldton netballer Allen Griechen has etched his name in WA men’s netball history as the first recipient of the Jerome Gillbard Medal after his outstanding performance in the opening match of the Australian Men’s and Mixed Netball Championships. Griechen gave a tenacious performance for the WA under-17s men’s side in the season opener and became the first recipient of the Jerome Gillbard Medal for match MVP. The tournament is taking place in Perth from Sunday, April 5 with some of the country’s top men’s netballers and mixed teams competing at Gold Netball Centre. Announced on social media, West Coast Thunder said the medal was more than an award, but recognition of a pioneer in men’s netball in WA. “Jerome was selected for this honour for his tireless advocacy for boys’ pathways — a mission that began with a drive to ensure every young athlete had a place on the court,” the post said. “He is driven by the desire to implement a sustainable pathway for the future. “As we award the Jerome Gillbard Medal today, we celebrate an athlete who proves that greatness is defined not just by how you play the game, but by how many doors you open for those who follow you.” West Coast Thunder’s under-17s side had a blazing start to their campaign with a 37-63 win over South Australia. Donning the goal defence bib, Griechen held SA co-captain and goal attack Thomas Hobbs to eight goals, earning the match MVP nod. Another Geraldton local is currently in Perth for the Australian men’s championship, with Kelly Eastough assistant coaching the West Coast Thunder men’s side. Griechen was last year named the Geraldton Guardian Mid West Sports Awards’ junior sports star of the year.
