Big field for weekend’s triathlon

More than 300 competitors headed to the Karri Valley Resort at the weekend to take part in this year’s triathlon event.

About 290 people competed in the long and short courses on Saturday and there were about 50 children who took part in the junior events on Sunday.

Event organiser Anthony Wilson said the numbers were higher than last year which was more than he predicted would take part.

“It was a wonderful day for everyone and the majority of the event was smooth sailing thanks to everyone being so helpful, from the organisers, volunteers, spectators and competitors,” he said.

“Even the weather was in our favour, it was sunny and cool with some light winds which is perfect for a triathlon.”

The fastest time in the long course event and Male Open Category winner was Matt Burton, who crossed the finish line with a time of 2 hours 35 minutes, followed closely by Simon Billeau in second and Blake Kappier in third.

The first female competitor and Female Open Category winner was Emily Loughnan, who finished 14th overall with a time of 2 hours 59 minutes.

The fastest time in the short course was Reece Harris with a time of 59 minutes, followed by Dean Sanders in second and Joel Keeble in third.

The first female competitor was Michelle Carranza, who finished 7th overall with a time of 1 hour 13 minutes.

Wilson said he was grateful to all members of the community including the Manjimup Scouts and Manjimup Senior High School for volunteering their time to help with the event.
