Ex-Sydney Swan and Fremantle Dockers star Troy Cook touched down in Derby, Broome and Looma last week on a tour of the North East, to educate young males about the importance of sporting and healthy lifestyles.

Cook, who currently plays for Perth Football Club, works as a health and leadership program manager for the David Wirrpanda Foundation.

Cook’s motivational talks promoted health, wellness and highlighted his inspirational journey through football.

He served up healthy barbecue tucker and spoke individually to participants.

“We should never underestimate the benefits of good nutrition in relation to good sports performance,” Cook said.

“By visiting the region we hope to empower young men and help them evaluate opportunities and challenges associated with day-to-day living.”

Kimberley Population Health dietitian Jenna Cowie said local men and sports groups had an invaluable opportunity to meet an Australian sporting hero, while learning first-hand about good food.

“Troy was very well received among the region’s communities and it was great to see many young males impressed by his participation and understanding,’ she said.

“Our message is that food can help improve longevity and performance, which for many AFL men out there can help avoid injury, make socially and personally responsible decisions and reduce threats to overall health and wellbeing.”

Ten-week leadership programs are designed to allow young footballers experience the life of a professional athlete by participating alongside mentors.
