Plans to transform parts of Old Broome and Cable Beach as part of an urban renewal program are under way.

The WA Housing Authority and the Shire of Broome will initially develop a strategy that would focus on three priority precincts around Anne Street, Dora Street and Cable Beach.

Calls have now gone out for residents living in the areas to get involved the decision making process.

The Shire of Broome was seeking two representatives from each of the three precincts to form the Broome Urban Renewal Community and Stakeholder Reference Group.

Shire president Ron Johnston said it was an exciting project that should involve local residents.

“We’re looking for interested resident and landowner community members to put their hands up for the reference group that will provide input and feedback on this exciting urban renewal initiative, and encourage the wider community to become involved,” he said.

He said the aim was to improve local amenity and liveability for residents as well as housing diversity and choice by revitalising existing housing and creating local affordable housing options.

Further objectives include appropriately distributing social housing in the community, and providing new dwellings that are responsive to the local climate, as well as cultural and lifestyle considerations.

Nominations for the Broome Urban Renewal Community and Stakeholder Reference Group are due by Thursday July 14, 2016.

Nomination forms and more information are available on the Shire of Broome website at www.broome.wa.gov.au.
