Hot ginger wiener takes out top gong at Sizzlefest sausage competition

A sausage featuring local rum, ginger beer, chilli, mango and boab has ruled the inaugural Sizzlefest competition at the recent Boab Metals FEASTival as part of the Taste of the Kimberley Festival. Competitors were tasked with creating a sausage that captures the spirit of the Kimberley through unique, regionally inspired flavour combinations. Dubbed the “Dark and Sorby”, the sausage featured spiced rum from the Hoochery Distillery and Matso’s ginger beer, as well as a chilli, mango and boab chutney from boabs in the Kimberley. The team behind it — the Sorby Sizzlers — had a little help from Tenderspot master butcher Murray Salter, who hosted workshops teaching teams how to create the sausages and made sure their 10kg sausage were cooked and presented to the public for the tasting and vote. As well as receiving the inaugural trophy, the Sorby Sizzlersr were also awarded $2000 in prize money, which they generously donated to two local community groups — the Kununurra Picture Gardens and the Kununurra Community Garden Kitchen. The picture gardens intends to use the funds for new equipment and upgrades, while the garden kitchen will help support their Sunday Feed program and equipment purchases. The Dark and Sorby sausage will now be available for purchase for a limited time at Tenderspot Butchers in Kununurra.
