Get lost in a book for WA's year of reading
A Broome librarian is urging the community to make a book-related resolution for the year.
“The more you read, the more you know. The more you know, the smarter you grow. The smarter you are, the stronger your voice, when speaking your mind or making a choice.”
Remember this, Broome Public Library manager Jean Indermaur said, as you consider getting lost in books this year – which might be a timely New Year’s resolution.
Broome Library will launch local celebrations of 2012, the National Year of Reading, with a morning tea and a read-a-thon to continue all year.
Each Australian State has had six books nominated for entry to the National Year of Reading collection.
On Tuesday, February 14, the winning WA book will be announced, and at Broome Library there will be a morning tea to kick off the read-a-thon – with a member of the public reading out one page each day the library is open, for the rest of the year.
The WA shortlist is: Jandamarra and the Bunuba Resistance by Broome’s Howard Pedersen and Banjo Woorunmurra, My Place by Sally Morgan, True Country by Kim Scott, Cloudstreet by Tim Winton, Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey and The Newspaper of Claremont Street by Elizabeth Jolley.
Ms Indermaur said it would be the first read-a-thon held in the library.
“So if you would like to have your voice heard or just enjoy reading aloud, please come down and offer a few minutes of your time,” she said.
Broome Public Library membership is free.
