Tigers, Diorites fight out epic derby draw

A frenetic last quarter produced numerous lead changes and four players kicked 20 goals between them in an epic shoot-out between Boulder and Mines Rovers on Saturday that ended in a draw, 16.6 (102) to 15.12 (102), to highlight the Goldfields Football League’s annual Rivalry Round. The clash at Digger Daws Oval for the Turner-Wojtowicz Trophy might realistically have been decided by quarter-time, when Mines Rovers enjoyed 10 scoring shots to one but they misfired for 4.6. It proved costly — Boulder rallied for three goals in the opening five minutes of the second term and an efficient 5.2 in a pivotal third stanza that set-up an absorbing run home. Ten goals were kicked in the last quarter — the first off the boot of Boulder’s Guy Laughlin that put the Tigers in front by a point at the three-minute mark. But it was short-lived, with two goals to Samuel Stubbs just moments apart restoring an 11-point lead for Mines Rovers. At the opposite end of the ground, Boulder spearhead Dustin Walters continued his major impact with the last of his six goals. The Diorites counter-punched with Ethan Redcliffe’s major with 13 minutes left and a forced behind made it an even two-goal margin. Boulder, however, maintained the fight and arguably the play of the game occurred deep in their forward line when an opposition defender kicked into the man on the mark. The ensuing loose ball was pounced on by Boulder’s Shyrone Graham, who ran into an open goal. Laughlin followed-up with a goal that levelled the scores with 10 minutes remaining. Six minutes ticked over without addition to the scores before the deadlock was again broken with Sam Burge’s conversion that handed back the lead to Mines Rovers. More twists in the tail followed when back-to-back goals to Laughlin and Graham gave Boulder a six-point lead with just over two minutes left. Mines Rovers, however, pressed again and Ethan Sambo calmly slotted the last of the side’s 15 goals from right on the 50m arc with a minute to play. From the next clearance, Boulder worked the ball within metres of their goal in the dying moments, but two stoppages preceded the final siren. Mines Rovers had led at every change — by 24 points, 22 points and three points, and kicked 4.4 in the last term. Boulder’s victory bid was underpinned by 6.1 in the final quarter, with Walters’ six goals complemented by Laughlin’s five. In the blue-and-whites’ camp, Samuel Stubbs led the charge with five goals and Redcliffe bagged four. “In the end, it’s a draw which I’m not sure anyone is really happy with,” Boulder coach Kye Bradley said. “They (Mines Rovers) had some really big inclusions which definitely challenged us and after their decent start, our boys had to work their arses off to peg it back. “We had the confidence throughout that we could do it, but it might have taken us a bit longer than we’d expected.” Even when the Tigers grabbed the lead inside the final three minutes, Bradley said he never assumed that victory was safely in their grasp. “Not at any stage did I think we were home — even with that last couple of seconds (deep in Boulder’s forward line) when the scores were level and the ball was going everywhere,” he said. “No-one knew what was going to happen — that’s what made it such a great game.” Mines Rovers coach Marc Johnstone reflected on his side’s big start that wasn’t reflected on the scoreboard. “Ten shots to one in the first quarter and there were a couple of easy ones we should have capitalised on,” Johnstone said. “Even in the last (quarter), we could have better capitalised but there’s good signs there. “I would have been really disappointed had we lost — when you’re coaching, you tend to get caught up in things and don’t get to sit back, have a beer and enjoy the game for what it was. “But we retained the Turner-Wojtowicz Trophy, which is what we set out to do. “The downside is that we’ve lost one game for the season and find ourselves in third position.”
