AI tech transition will mean fewer mining jobs, Gold Industry Group panel forum told

The transition to tech-driven automated mining will inevitably see fewer jobs available while mines used cheap power, attendees at an industry breakfast panel discussion were told on Tuesday morning. The Gold Industry Group breakfast panel painted a picture of mines transformed by artificial intelligence, revolutionised by robotics and operated remotely from anywhere in the world in a vision of the industry beyond 2050. Speaking at the event, Gold Fields chief executive Mike Fraser made it clear technology would transform mining jobs. “The futurists are predicting that from an AI point of view, there is going to be a similarity between general intelligence of machines and humans by 2050,” he said. “You could almost imagine a world where we actually don’t have people on site, that everything is being managed remotely and, in fact, you have robots actually mining for you.” While new technology is set to help mines maximise extraction from ore bodies, Mr Fraser said the opportunities will come with challenges. “This transition is going to mean fewer jobs, no doubt about it,” he said. “But I also believe . . . there’s going to be different types of jobs you’re going to have to develop, they’re going to be high-quality jobs, and you’re going to find those jobs probably a lot more mobile. “In some respects, what you’re going to be creating and contributing is to a much more global talent pool.” Part of the technological change will push power prices down significantly, according to Northern Star Resources managing director and chief executive Stuart Tonkin. Mr Tonkin reminded panel attendees Australia was aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050. “That’s going to be fascinating because there’s a lot of efforts in renewable projects and all sorts of things going into to establish a net-zero environment,” he said. “The one technical thing that net zero also means for us is almost free power — so the cost of power will be very, very low. “Now all the capital sunk to establish that is a lot of money but . . . think of what power can liberate in all of this technology and all the things that we can do suddenly.” Evolution Mining geologist Grace Cruise was confident technology would not threaten her line of work, while the chief executive of mining consultancy idoba, Sarah Coleman, said more needed to be done to boost the adoption of technology. “I think there’s this balance between how to focus on the invention of the future, (and) then how do we get the adoption right,” she said. “We’ve had a lot of invention, and there’s still a lot of inventions that need to go, but we still don’t put enough effort into the adoption and getting that right.”
