Independent MP Nick McBride arrested, charged over alleged assault of wife
Independent MP Nick McBride has been arrested and charged by police for allegedly assaulting his wife.
About 10.30am on Saturday, South Australian police were called after reports of a domestic assault at a home in Conmurra in the state’s south.
“A 56-year-old man from Robe was subsequently arrested and charged with aggravated assault, breach of bail and breaching terms of an intervention order,” a police spokesperson said.
Mr McBride – one of South Australia’s richest men – has not responded to calls and requests for comment.
A police spokesperson also confirmed that police spoke to an 82-year-old man from Kingston South who was also reported for aggravated assault.
He will be summonsed to court at a later date.
Mr McBride was elected to the South East seat of MacKillop as a Liberal in 2018 but stepped away in 2023 citing “factional pressures at play” and “disunity”.
A grazier turned politician, Mr McBride’s family is the 18th largest landholder in the nation with properties covering more than 1.1 million hectares.
His political career is now shrouded in uncertainty following the alleged offences.
