New Australian National Uni report identifies Yamatji Land Estate as prime location for renewable energy

A new report has identified the Yamatji Land Estate as a prime location for renewable energy, with the Mid West boasting some of Australia’s strongest solar and wind resources. The Rapid Assessment Summary Report, from the Yamatji Southern Regional Corp (YSRC) and the Australian National University (ANU), highlighted the estate’s potential for clean energy, with data revealing that its solar energy quality was 6 per cent higher than in Perth, and its wind energy capacity was 33 per cent stronger than any existing Australian wind farms. With support from the Mid West Development Commission and Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, the project would provide a clear pathway for the long-term economic and employment benefits of the Yamatji Nation. “This is a huge opportunity for our people,” YSRC chief executive officer Luka Gray said. “We can create a sustainable future with new businesses and local jobs, ensuring the Yamatji Nation benefits directly from the clean energy transition.” ANU professor and vice-president (First Nations) Peter Yu highlighted the significance of the report and its findings. “This project shows what’s possible when First Nations knowledge and academic research come together,” he said. “It’s a practical demonstration of what self-determination looks like when communities have access to high-quality data, deep technical partnerships, and a vision for long-term economic transformation. “The Yamatji Nation is in a position to lead, creating a model for the rest of the country.”
