City of Greater Geraldton hosting two sessions to educate prospective council candidates ahead of election

People interested in running for council at the October local government elections are encouraged to attend upcoming candidate information sessions. The sessions next week will enable prospective candidates to learn more about the roles and responsibilities of councillors. “Councillors play a vital role in shaping our city’s future and representing the long-term interests of our community,” City of Greater Geraldton mayor Jerry Clune said. “You might be surprised about the diversity of the role and the range of decisions we make. “I strongly encourage anyone considering running in this year’s election to attend a session and learn more about what the role entails.” The two sessions will be held on Monday, August 18 from 5-8pm at the Geraldton Civic Centre and on Wednesday, August 20 from 4.30-6pm at Bundiyarra Aboriginal Community Aboriginal Corporation. Mr Clune, city CEO Ross McKim and a representative from the WA Electoral Commission will give presentations. Nominations open on Thursday, August 28 and close at 4pm on Thursday, September 4. Four seats are up for grabs in Greater Geraldton at the October 18 election, which will be conducted as a postal ballot. Local government reforms will reduce the council from 11 councillors to nine, including the mayor.
