Buccaneers’ under-11 girls wrap up Geraldton’s State basketball championships campaign with an undefeated run

Geraldton has put an exclamation mark on its Basketball WA State Championships campaign, with the under-11 division-3 girls side sealing their title in sensational fashion. The under-11 girls were the only side that went undefeated in their division out of Geraldton’s representative sides, demonstrating the sheer dominance displayed across the weekend. They averaged a winning margin of 17 points across all seven games, keeping their opposition to single-digit scores in five matches. Geraldton would have slept well on Saturday night, knowing they had sealed a spot in finals with one group stage game left to play, after taking four wins earlier in the day. On Sunday morning, they finalised their ladder leader status with a 24-point win over Warwick Senators at Bendat Basketball Centre before they looked to the semifinal against East Perth. Their terrific form continued into finals, claiming a resounding 23-8 win over the Eagles, to storm into the afternoon’s grand final. During the decider, it became the Maya Clarkson show as she hit 19 points, more than half of Geraldton’s final score of 37. The final score of 37-14 was also Geraldton’s highest score of the tournament. There’s no surprise Clarkson was top scorer of the division with 66 points — she’s certainly a rising star to keep an eye on. Maisie Steel and Sadie Barnes also had strong tournaments, finishing fourth and fifth in the point scorers tally with a combined 57 points. Geraldton’s State championships campaign wrapped with three titles — under-11 boys and girls, and under-19 boys winning their divisions, while the under-17s boys and girls teams were runners-up.
