A teenager is recovering in hospital after a suspected shark bite off Mindarie.

Joondalup Hospital described the boy’s condition as stable, and his injuries as non-life threatening.

Witnesses said he was bitten on the ankle.

A friend drove him from Catalina Beach in Mindarie to the emergency department shortly after 3pm on Thursday afternoon.

Authorities had no reports of shark sightings in the area, according to the SharkSmart website, but a three metre shark was spotted only 40 metres from the shore near Port Beach in Perth’s south on New Year’s Eve.
