Martin Thomas Glynn: New charges for Perth man accused of voicing racial hatred, backing Bondi shooters

A Perth man accused of praising the Bondi massacre online and firearms offences has been hit with fresh charges and flagged a new bid to secure bail. Martin Thomas Glynn allegedly posted on Instagram his “100 per cent support” for the alleged gunmen — Islamic State-supporting father-and-son duo Sajid and Naveed Akram — on the same day, December 14, that the horror unfolded. The 39-year-old is alleged to have written his full name and that the shooters had a “RIGHT TO SELF DEFENCE AGAINST JEWS AND ALL FUTURE JEWS”. “What did they expect if they killed 500,000 Palestinians?” Mr Glynn allegedly wrote. WA Police raided his Yangebup home and seized multiple registered firearms and ammunition — and allegedly also found Hamas and Hezbollah flags. Mr Glynn was initially charged with one count each of conduct intended to racially harass, possessing a prohibited weapon and failing to store a firearm in compliant storage. When he faced Fremantle Magistrates Court via videolink from Hakea Prison on Tuesday, Magistrate Andrew Matthews noted he faced two additional charges. Mr Glynn also has one count of possessing firearm technology while not authorised by a licence or permit and a further firearm storage failure charge. The accused spoke to confirm his name and that he understood the new charges. He was not required to enter pleas. Details of the new allegations, stemming from the same December 23 property search, were not aired. Mr Glynn was represented by a Legal Aid lawyer, who said the taxpayer-funded service had only recently been granted to him and accordingly asked for an adjournment. She also flagged a bail application at her client’s next court appearance on February 27 and Mr Matthews pointed out it had been refused previously. Mr Glynn will receive legal advice in the meantime, the court was told. After the initial charges were laid, police commissioner Col Blanch said a member of the public had raised the alarm about the comments. Mr Glynn was not known to authorities before the tip-off, Mr Blanch said. The raid was part of Operation Dalewood, launched after the worst terrorist attack on Australian soil claimed the lives of 15 people, including a 10-year-old girl.
