Corbin Birch: Man accused of racially harassing neighbour ends up in court again over charges of nazi graffiti

A man already accused of racially harassing his neighbour has faced court for allegedly drawing nazi symbols on his body with a “Texta”. Corbin Birch, 36, was spotted allegedly graffitiing on a footpath by police as they patrolled Albany Highway in St James about 4.45pm on Friday. When he was questioned by officers, Mr Birch was allegedly observed with nazi symbols drawn on his body. Cannington police charged him with displaying a nazi symbol in a public place and a damaged property by graffiti offence. Appearing in Northbridge Magistrates Court on Saturday, Mr Birch faced magistrate Elizabeth Woods, who told him he was “in a world of pain”. The police prosecutor alleged he was caught with black markings on his face and wrist, which including a partially rubbed off swastika symbol. When Magistrate Woods asked Mr Birch to clarify whether it was a tattoo or black marker, he replied, “It was just . . . Texta”. “I wont do that again,” he said. Magistrate Woods told Mr Birch that “you’re in a world of pain”. “In light of what’s happened more recently I’d have a think about your attitudes and what you’re drawing on yourself and other places.” The court was told that Mr Birch was already facing allegations that he delivered a letter to his neighbour which intended to “racially harass”. He was granted bail by Magistrate Woods on the graffiti and nazi offence on Saturday, and ordered to arrange a personal undertaking and avoid his neighbour. Mr Birch, with black marker smudged on his shirt, face and wrists, started singing outside court before he directed profanities towards reporters on Saturday. He did not respond to questions and will next appear in court on January 19. A WA Police spokesman said police would “continue to take firm action against any individual or group who seeks to incite hatred or division through public displays of extremist ideology”.
