Anil Sharma: South Australian truck driver admits killing Perth cyclist Chris Baker after charge downgrade

A South Australian truck driver charged over the hit-and-run death of Perth cyclist Chris Barker will no longer stand trial after having the most serious charge against him downgraded in a plea deal. Anil Sharma, 38, was behind the wheel of a road train that hit Mr Barker on Eyre Highway near Madura, about 180km west of Eucla, near the State border on March 21, 2024. The 62-year-old was cycling in the same direction, participating in the Indian Pacific Wheel Ride from Fremantle to Sydney, a gruelling 5500km unsupported solo race he had completed previously. Sharma appeared in the Supreme Court of WA on Tuesday when he reiterated his not guilty plea to manslaughter, first entered in November, but pleaded guilty to dangerous driving resulting in death. He also pleaded guilty to failing to stop and ensure assistance after an incident occasioning death. A count of attempting to defeat course of justice, over allegations he wilfully destroyed evidence, was discontinued. Sharma had his bail renewed and will face a sentencing hearing on December 12. In an online tribute, Mr Barker was described as an outstanding cyclist who had ridden all over his home country of New Zealand and around Australia, including north to south crossings and Race to The Rock. “He is sadly missed and a true cycling legend,” the friend wrote.
