Alanah Gail Smithwick: Forensic psychiatric report ordered in baby murder case as mum appears with cast on arm

A woman accused of murdering her eight month-old baby has had her case adjourned so that a forensic psychiatric report can be completed. Alanah Gail Smithwick, 28, appeared via videolink at Stirling Gardens Magistrate Court on Wednesday with her right arm in a pink plaster cast. She has been in custody since her arrest on October 30 when homicide detectives found her baby dead at a home at Winpara Way, in Baldivis. Ms Smithwick was also found injured at the scene and was taken to Rockingham General Hospital for medical treatment. It is understood the injuries were inflicted by a sharp-edged weapon. Neighbours said police flooded the street on the morning of October 30, including a chaplain who provided emotional support to officers confronted by the tragic scene. The following morning Ms Smithwick was charged with murder. Shocked neighbours placed flowers and teddy bears at the scene to pay tribute to the infant. At the short court hearing, her lawyer asked for an eight-week adjournment for the report to be completed. The case will return to court on January 21.
