Accused coward‑punch attacker Brodie Jake Dewar seen for the first time since being released on bail

The man accused of killing WA Labor figure and mining executive Tim Picton in a cowardly one-punch attack is making the most of his freedom after a judge granted him bail. On Friday, Brodie Jake Dewar was seen coming and going from his Lesmurdie home alongside his mother, just 48-hours after he was released from Hakea prison under strict court-ordered conditions. The 20-year-old was dressed in a West Coast Eagles hat and clutching paperwork as he walked inside the house. He emerged a short time later to wheel the rubbish bins in from the kerb, and didn’t respond to questions. Mr Dewar’s father offered a thumbs up, while a woman said they were doing “good” when asked how they felt about the bail decision. On Wednesday, Mr Dewar faced the WA Supreme Court where he was granted bail by Justice Joseph McGrath, after the prosecution made the extraordinary back flip and no longer oppose his release from custody. Justice McGrath granted bail under 12 strict conditions including a curfew which allows early starts for his roof plumbing and gas fitting apprenticeship. He is banned from entering licensed premises, or leaving WA and had to surrender his passport. Mr Dewar isn’t required to report to his local police station — a 10 minute drive away in Forrestfield, instead he will be subjected to random visits from officers and will have to provide a breath test and a sample of urine for analysis. He was required to provide a $10,000 personal undertaking and $20,000 surety. Mr Dewar is accused of attacking Mr Picton outside the Paramount nightclub in Northbridge at about 5.30am on December 27. His initial charge of grievous bodily harm was upgraded to manslaughter in February after the 36-year-old father-of-one died in hospital on January 19. Mr Dewar was initially granted bail, but it was revoked weeks later when charged with act or omission causing bodily harm over another alleged coward-punch attack outside the Kalamunda Hotel on Christmas Eve. He is accused of filming the complainant in the Kalamunda case as he lay on the ground and posting the clip to Snapchat, saying: “Don’t hit on my younger sister next time, brother. Keep snoring”. Perth Magistrates Court was told in February that in the Northbridge incident, he was angered by the belief Mr Picton was paying too much attention to his female cousin at the nightclub. It is alleged that as they stood outside on James Street, Mr Dewar extended his right arm to shake Mr Picton’s hand but instead allegedly punched him to the left-hand side of his jaw, causing him to fall and strike his head on the pavement. At the time of the punch, Mr Picton was smoking a cigarette and had his other hand in his pocket. Mr Picton’s loved ones strongly opposed the 20-year-old’s release on bail. On Wednesday, prosecutor Justin Whalley acknowledged that Mr Picton’s family ”strongly disagreed” with the State’s position to grant him bail. Mr Whalley said that to oppose bail, the State would have to submit that no condition could be imposed on Mr Dewar to mitigate his risk of offending. “That is not a submission that is accurate,” he said. Mr Dewar appeared via videolink and fought back tears when Justice McGrath agreed to his release on bail. He is due to face court again on March 18.
