Gemma Acton: If you strip away population growth and rising prices, Christmas spending has actually dropped

There’s an infamous scene in Woody Allen’s hit film Annie Hall where a split screen shows a couple in their respective therapists’ offices giving vastly different answers to the same questions. When each asked how often they make love, Diane Keaton’s character whines “constantly” while her boyfriend, played by Woody himself, grumbles “hardly ever”. Yet both agree it’s three times a week. I was reminded of the importance of perspective when reading the latest two consumer confidence surveys from ANZ-Roy Morgan and Westpac/Melbourne Institute. Both arrived in my inbox within minutes of each other with the former headlined “Consumer confidence: highest since February” and the latter leading with “Slight lift in sentiment as consumers limp towards year-end.” Each suggests a starkly different snapshot of confidence among Australian consumers but when you open the reports, the charts follow very similar trajectories. Moreover, both headlines are accurate. Digging into the details of ANZ’s report, the positives highlighted are relief at the December RBA interest rate hold, inflation expectations tumbling to their second lowest in six months (after October’s report undershot expectations) and confidence in the economy for the year ahead at its second highest in six months. The party spoiler at this feel-good festival was the significant numbers who do not think it’s a good time to buy a major item — even despite the steady stream of sales events at year end. This matters. While consumers have done a remarkable job of keeping up their spending despite being battered by interest rate hikes, inflation and more of our money being taken by the taxman, it’s now been more than a year and a half of staring down these challenges. That’s enough time to accept the situation might stick around for longer than expected and change even hard-wired spending habits. Indications consumers are running out of steam abound. There’ll be fewer Monopoly sets, Peppa Pig paraphernalia and Dungeons & Dragons kits under Christmas trees this year with the American toymaking behemoth Hasbro last week shedding nearly a fifth of its staff in response to a slowdown in sales that shows no sign of abating. The boss of trucking and rail freight giant Linfox also recently warned that the volume of deliveries is trending down and that after perhaps one last hurrah for Christmas, it’ll be a tough start to 2024. He observes that the picture from his customers is of a sustained shift to end consumers trading down and increasingly selecting value products. No one needs to remind the luxury sector of this. After an unprecedented boomtime for the purveyors of prime products at premium price tags, sector bellwether LVMH (owner of Louis Vuitton, Moet Hennessy and an expansive cross-section of the most exclusive luxury marques), has seen its share price collapse by nearly 20 per cent since April on fears tougher times are here to stay. A new dataset from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows turnover (as an approximate proxy for revenue) falling in October for consumer-facing businesses. Spending on arts and recreation tumbled by 6 per cent during the month while travel agents and event ticketing activity also dropped sharply. In response to all the cost pressures, we’re not just buying less and trading down — we’re also making more seismic life choices. While the market no doubt remains the friend of landlords not renters, the picture has marginally improved in recent weeks. Over the past month the vacancy rate has edged off record lows across the country with only Hobart seeing fewer properties become available. To an extent this is to be expected at year-end as international students flock home and there’s a degree of attrition in families whose lives are changing permanently — for example with their children finishing school. But there are grounds to hope that this marginal easing could persist with many using the year’s end to make longer-lasting changes to their living plans. At the moment, these often involve finding a smaller space or bunking in with more family, friends or even random flatmates. A more unexpected sign of cost-of-living pressures hitting hard is the number of Year 12 students applying for university has this year sunk to a decade-low. For many the staggering expense of university is hard to justify in the face of rising prices at a time when the jobs market may be softening but is still favourable for workers — the opportunity cost of not taking the paid option just seems too high right now. A few days out from Christmas, the Australian Retailers Association is striking a relatively positive tone — upping its forecast for pre-Christmas spending to $67.4 billion — a 1 per cent increase on last year. The sunnier prediction has been helped by stellar black Friday sales results and the Reserve Bank sitting on its hands this month. But as highlighted in the peak industry body’s press release, the strong numbers to date have been aided along by “unprecedented deals and sales”. Moreover, if you strip away our population growth and rising prices, Christmas spending has actually dropped this year. There’ll no doubt be one last hurrah — another flurry of fast and furious sales shopping kicking off on Boxing Day before we brace for what’s most likely to be a leaner year ahead for retailers and consumers alike.
