Woman ‘very guilty’ over bag theft

A woman has admitted she is “very guilty” after she brazenly stole a bank deposit bag that belonged to a Broome business as its employee tried to deposit the money. Roslyn Margret Spratt appeared in Broome Magistrate’s Court via video link from Melaleuca Women’s Prison, and pleaded guilty to the stealing charge. The court was told Spratt attended the local Commonwealth Bank branch with her partner on August 12 and waited around the coin machine when she saw a woman enter the branch with a yellow bank deposit bag. After hanging around the woman as she tried to use the coin machine to deposit the money, Spratt approached from behind and stole the bag. The bag belonged to Broome Carwash and contained $3545. Spratt told the court she was waiting to exchange some foreign money she had and was not thinking straight when she stole the bag. She also submitted she used the money to buy drugs after initially coming to Broome with her partner to get married. Despite Spratt’s remorse and desire to have the charge dealt with, Magistrate Stephen Sharratt told her she was yet to be sentenced for further stealing charges in Carnarvon Magistrate’s Court. Spratt said she was happy to adjourn sentencing until after her outstanding matters were dealt with, before telling the court she believed the Carnarvon magistrate did not like her very much after a prior incident in which she allegedly swore at them. She told Mr Sharratt she was also refused bail by that same magistrate during her last appearance. Spratt was remanded in custody to be sentenced on November 16, two weeks after her next appearance in Carnarvon Magistrate’s Court.
