Woman fined $3000 for trespassing onto Broome International Airport runway

A WA woman has been fined $3000 after trespassing onto the tarmac of Broome International Airport in the hopes of catching a plane to Perth. The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested on June 25 at around 4.15pm when she walked directly onto the runway before being approached by security and escorted away. The 27-year-old appeared before Broome Magistrates Court on June 26 charged with one count of entering an airside area without permission. The court heard the woman was under the influence of methamphetamine and cannabis, and wanted to catch a flight to Perth to see her friend. Her legal aid acknowledged her client accepts “it was a silly thing to do” and not how one would approach catching a flight. Magistrates Deen Potter handed the woman a $3000 fine for the incident with community-based orders.
