WKFL to go ahead despite border uncertainty

The West Kimberley Football League plans to proceed with a full season, despite uncertainty over restrictions once the border re-opens on March 3. Speaking to the Broome Advertiser, outgoing WKFL president Sam Alexeeff said the league would abide by any health advice when it was released. “Obviously the last few years have meant chopping and changing to abide by the relevant health information at the time, but last year we were able to have a fairly undisturbed season with one of the most memorable finals series we’ve ever had,” he said. “The plan is to do the same this season — footy is so important in the Kimberley and we really want to see it thrive.” The league annual general meeting is due to be held on March 3, the same day as the border re-opens, with a number of board positions up for grabs. “I won’t be returning as president, but I’m happy to stay on as a director if I’m wanted,” Mr Alexeeff said. “So we’re really looking for a new president, someone who is passionate about our great game and wants to see it flourish in the West Kimberley.” With uncertainty over how COVID may play out in the region, Mr Alexeeff said most games would be played in Broome and Derby, with games in communities only having a limited number of attendees. “Obviously the number one priority is to have a safe season,” he said. “While it’s not the most equitable to play so many games in Broome and Derby, with the situation in front of us, it’s the best we can do. “In an ideal world — and hopefully in years to come — we’ll see more and more games played out in communities, but for this year most will be in the towns.” The season is planned to run from late April to the grand final in September. The league is currently not planning on a pre-season lightning carnival, instead holding education workshops for umpires, coaches and club presidents which will include concussion workshops.
