There will be footy in 2020 but not quite as we know it, according to West Kimberley Football League president Sam Alexeeff.

After holding several meetings with clubs and board members this week, the WKFL made the heartbreaking decision to not go ahead with the traditional premiership season this year.

It is understood the health and safety of players, the logistics surrounding players travelling from remote communities and the financial positions of clubs were key concerns.

The league will be spending the remainder of this month looking at alternative options like AFL 9s or lightning carnivals, with a focus on participation.

It is understood junior AFL would resume.
