Every great kitchen project needs to have all the essential components, and with Mitre 10’s exclusive appliance design hints and tips, you will have everything you need.

One of the essential components to consider when designing a kitchen is the appliances, as they ultimately determine the functionality and practicality of your kitchen.

First, determine whether your kitchen will feature a gas or electric cooktop and be sure to allow a minimum 450mm of space either side of the cooktop for safety and extra working space.

Be sure to allow a minimum 650mm of space between your cooktop and rangehood.

If you want the appliance to be a showpiece, consider one of Mitre 10’s freestanding 900mm dual gas hobs or electric ovens.

For a themed kitchen, consider a wider rangehood to create a homely country kitchen feel.

If you’re a minimalist, try the latest in glass-top touch-control for an easy clean, or a highly sought-after induction cooktop.

Complement this with a sleek pull-out or built in rangehood for a tidy kitchen, leaving maximum room for storage.

Dishwashers and microwaves mustn’t be overlooked, with both found in 90 per cent of recent kitchens, and helpful when considering resale values.

For ease of plumbing, place a dishwasher near the sink and allow a minimum 600mm of space to house it. Leave space between a cabinet and your wall so doors can be fully opened and the cabinet can be easily accessed.

Lastly, allow a minimum 1.2m of space between opposite cabinets for manoeuvrability in your kitchen.
