Kimberley Mineral Sands has shipped its one-millionth tonne of product from its Thunderbird Mine in a milestone for the mining development.

KMS chief operating officer Michael Rose said the million-tonne export milestone reflected the company’s investment in Thunderbird operations and the broader West Kimberley.

“This milestone reflects the strength of our partnerships and would not have been possible without strong collaboration between KMS, our contractors and Kimberley Ports Authority, who have worked together to facilitate bulk exports through the Port of Broome,” he said.

The Thunderbird Mine, which is on the Dampier Peninsula midway between Derby and Broome, started exporting product through the Port of Broome in March 2024.

Kimberley Ports Authority chief executive Luke Westlake welcomed the milestone and said it demonstrated the authority’s flexibility to accommodate new industries at the Port of Broome.

“Reaching one million tonnes bulk export with Kimberley Mineral Sands is a proud moment for the Kimberley Ports Authority.” he said.

“We have developed new infrastructure and our team’s capability and capacity to support this important local project.”
