Thunderbird mine ships first bulk export out of Broome, marking major milestone

Kimberley Mineral Sands has successfully exported its first bulk shipment of zircon mineral sands concentrate from the Thunderbird Mine in the West Kimberley, marking a major milestone for the project. The landmark shipment, totalling approximately 10,000 tonnes, departed from the Port of Broome aboard the MV Pacific Fortune on March 24, destined for KMS’ international offtake partners. Kimberley Mineral Sands chief operating officer Michael Rose said the company was extremely proud of achieving the pivotal milestone after years of dedication, meticulous planning and substantial investment. “Thanks to the support of our joint venture partners, the local community, government and investors, today we celebrated the inaugural export of bulk mineral sands from Broome,” he said. Looking ahead, Kimberley Mineral Sands aims to continue its positive contributions to both the local and WA economy, solidifying its position as a key player in the global mineral sands market. The Thunderbird Mineral Sands Project is projected to play a substantial role in the industry, with estimates suggesting it will account for 6.5 per cent of global zircon supply and 3.5 per cent of global ilmenite over its 36-year mine life. Currently, 371 people are employed on the Thunderbird Mine with 51 per cent of positions filled by West Kimberley residents. Zircon, the primary mineral exported out of the mine, finds widespread use in various industries and is a crucial component in the production of everyday ceramics, including tiles and kitchen crockery. The project is estimated to contribute a net uplift to the gross domestic product in Northern Australia of $2 billion over the first 20 years.
