Theatre Kimberley’s Sandfly Circus group prepares for Silly Plonkers spectacle
Crowds can expect a “super-sweet” and action-packed night at the circus as Theatre Kimberley puts the final touches on its latest show.
At Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre last week, circus students were being put through their paces with hula hoops, pyramids and trapeze routines ahead of their new performance, Silly Plonkers and the Dentist’s Factory.
Among those taking part was Mollie Athanitis, 11, who said her friends and Sandfly Circus’ trainers had created a fun and funny environment to learn in.
She said her friends had been involved and she did not want to miss out on all the fun.
“So I really wanted to join in because it sounded like a lot of fun, so I joined and it is really a lot of fun,” she said.
“I am a dancer so I love to do things in front of people, so it is not nerve-racking to me.”
Margaret Pigram, 11, has been part of the group since kindergarten and follows on from her sister, whom she said was an original circus member.
Margaret said showing people what she could do was “lots of fun”.
“The trainers here encourage you to have lots of fun and try new skills, and there are just so many different things to try,” she said. “I’m excited about all the acts but most of all I’m excited for people to come watch me perform.”
Broome directors Rowan Thomas and Jamie Bretman have been assisted by the Splash Test Dummies team and aerial supremo Crystal Stacey to bring together Sandfly Circus’ Silly Plonkers.
The show is billed as an “electrifying journey” with music, high-flying acrobatics, elaborate chases and larger-than-life lollies.
Described as a “sugar-rush” story, Silly Plonkers details in theatrical style what happens when a sugar high leads to even more disastrous results than poor teeth.
“It’s so rewarding to be able to work with the same local kids over a number of weeks, and watch them develop new skills,” Bretman said.
“We’ve all been working really hard, and the show is going to be fantastic.”
Silly Plonkers and the Dentist’s Factory will run on September 10 and 11 from 6.30pm at BRAC. Tickets are on sale via Humanitix or at the door.
