The temporary dual-lane crossing across the Fitzroy River is set to close and be dismantled to make way for construction of the new $200m Fitzroy Crossing Bridge due to be complete by mid-2024. According to Main Roads, the crossing will be closed from 7am Wednesday September 12 ahead of its planned removal with all traffic to be detoured to the single lane crossing via Forrest, Russ and Yurabi roads. The detour will be open 24 hours a day to all vehicles except for road trains and Over Size Over Mass vehicles that are over 20m, who will only be allowed to use the crossing during daylight hours from 6.30am to 5.30pm. The detour will remain in place until water levels rise over the crossing, at which point the barge system used previously will be re-introduced to take passengers and light vehicles across the Fitzroy. Main Roads is also investigating options to accommodate the movement of freight vehicles across the river during the wet season.
