Stories at centre of celebrations

The popular Broome Beach Books has returned as one of several events taking place in celebration of National Library and Information Week 2018.

Library and Information Week, which started on Monday, May 21, and concludes on Sunday, May 27, includes several fun events for Broome’s bookworms.

Library and Information Week aims to put the spotlight on libraries and information service professionals in Australia and showcases the many and varied resources and services libraries provide to the community.

Shire of Broome Library co-ordinator Sally Eaton said Broome Beach Books started on Wednesday, May 23, at Cable Beach, and will run each Wednesday from 11am to 11.45am until October.

“Library staff members will be at the top of the stairs at Cable Beach each week with a selection of books just perfect for reading by the ocean,” she said.

“People are invited to take a book, read it at their leisure wherever they want, and return it to either the library or the beach and swap for another beach book.

“There are no due dates or fines — it’s like a library without walls, so if you were hesitant to take our regular library books to the beach, why not grab one of our special beach books and enjoy them anywhere.”

In addition to the 2018 launch of Broome Beach Books, the National Simultaneous Storytime also took place on Wednesday, May 23.

Broome children joined others around Australia to read the same story at the same time.

“National Simultaneous Storytime aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books,” Ms Eaton said.

“This year’s title was Hickory Dickory Dash by Tony Wilson.”
