Shire of Broome council hikes rates nearly 6 per cent in 2024-25 budget

The Shire of Broome council has hiked rates by 5.97 per cent as part of its 2024-25 budget. The budget outlines the allocation of funds derived from rates, fees and external grants for this financial year. In crafting the 2024-25 budget the shire has remained steadfast in aligning with its Corporate Business Plan 2023-2027 and the Strategic Community Plan 2023-2033. The financial plan reflects a commitment to navigating the current economic challenges, including rising inflation, increased interest rates, higher utility costs and soaring insurance premiums. Shire of Broome president Chris Mitchell emphasised that the 2024-25 budget was designed with sustainability at its core. “We are proud of the significant progress of ongoing major initiatives during the past year and are excited to continue this momentum into the next financial year,” Mr Mitchell said. He noted that recent achievements have been supported by substantial Federal and State grants and independent industry backing, which have been the result of the shire’s persistent advocacy and lobbying efforts. The budget allocates funds for several key community projects, which include: $1.51 million for the Frederick Street roundabout (BRAC entry), funded by grants. $220,000 for BRAC importance level four upgrades, with 50 per cent of the funding coming from grants. $105,000 for streetlight upgrades. $157,500 for a new footpath along Frederick Street between Jewell Street and the Boulevard. $51,000 dedicated to actions from the Arts and Culture Strategy (2023-2028). $83,000 to implement the Youth Plan. $30,000 for the community safety plan review and Security Rebate Scheme. Mr Mitchell highlighted that the council’s balanced approach in adopting this budget aims to ensure critical capital and special projects are delivered without compromising the general operating costs, despite high inflation and interest rates. “The adopted 2024-25 budget reflects the council’s commitment to provide, facilitate and advocate for services and infrastructure to improve quality of life for everyone,” he said. “To maintain shire services that people rightly expect, we had to raise rates by 5.97 per cent, which takes into account that our remote location attracts additional CPI pressures to the shire’s operating budget. “The result is a sustainable budget that will contribute to Broome’s continued positive evolution and exciting future for everyone.”
