Sunday racing at the Broome Turf Club drew a crowd last weekend to watch exciting racing and fabulous fashions on the field.

Some favourites, collected the cash, and there were a couple of surprises, too.

Racegoers also got a glimpse of some of the horses that will front up later next month when the 2023 Broome Cup rolls around.

Those horses appeared in the 1800m race, which turned into a nailbiting finish between the Daniel Mortan-trained favourite Sunsphere, and second fav Final Plan, trained by Vannick Valenti; the favourite prevailing by a head.

Rogues Point is not only a holiday resort in South Australia, but also an impressive six-year-old grey gelding that is so far unbeaten in its four Broome starts.

In winning again over 1600m, he stamped himself as the one to beat in the horse of the year award.

In other races, the Bruce Kay trained Spiritson won its Maiden race.

Silkinize won its third race for the David Harrison stable.

Outsider, Toppa the Mountain gave trainer Peter Farrell a change of luck in race four.

Bounced straight to the lead by Kate Southam, who only takes the occasional ride, it trounced the odds on favourite Paeroa Lad by six lengths.

Gambler’s Gold from the Yannick Valenti yard led all the way in race five, and the final event gave rider Jess Valenti a winning double, when Rocking the Merc led all the way, to make it two wins on end, at a $10 quote.

This Saturday, racing moves to Derby, then back to Broome on Friday week.
