Premier Mark McGowan commits to funding safe boat launching harbour at Entrance Point in Broome

Premier Mark McGowan has committed $35 million for a safe boat launching harbour in Broome after decades of calls from recreational fishermen and locals. It was one of a swathe of election promises for the Kimberley Mr McGowan made today if the Labor party remains in power after WA takes the polls in March. The new boating facility at Entrance Point would include four sheltered boat ramp lanes, two finger jetties, expanded parking for 160 trailers and 60 cars, as well as tour coach access and a detached breakwater. Public open spaces, fishing platforms, viewing decks, public artwork, kiosk and food truck areas and amenities would also be included as part of the massive project. A statement from WA Labor today said the project would “sensitively” incorporate the historic dinosaur footprints and rock formations at the well-known spot near the Port of Broome. Mr McGowan said the long-needed facility would address safety and access concerns at the precinct. “This project will elevate Entrance Point into a quality community and tourism asset for Broome, providing a new public precinct for visitors and locals to recreate, fish and enjoy boating activities,” he said. The final design for the boat harbour was endorsed by the Shire of Broome in September, which would be responsible for delivering the massive project. The $35 million comprises part of Labor’s Plan for the Kimberley, which was formally unveiled by Mr McGowan, Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan and Labor candidate Divina D’Anna in the region today. Other major projects within the document include $10 million to build new blocks and a food and textiles classroom at Halls Creek District High School, $4.4 million for canteen renovations and a science and technology room at Broome Senior High School, $4.5 million towards upgrades in Yawuru conservation parks, $24.1 million to construct a new Halls Creek renal dialysis centre and $3 million funding for the Kimberley Women’s Health program. It also includes $6 million towards the Kununurra Leisure Centre Redevelopment, $4 million court upgrades at Fitzroy Crossing and $2.35 million to revamp courts at the Warmun community in the East Kimberley.
