Police charge 57-year-old man over Broome hit and run of 66-year-old man on Old Broome Road, Djugun

After more than two weeks of investigation, Police have charged a 57-year-old man over a hit-and-run incident in the Broome suburb of Djugun. It comes after a 66-year-old man was found on Old Broome Road at 6.15pm on July 26 and was taken to Broome Hospital before being airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital, where he remained in the intensive care unit in a stable condition for a number of days. Police confirmed on August 14 a 57-year-old man had been charged over the incident and would face court the same day charged with one count of driver failing to stop and ensure assistance received after an incident occasioning grievous bodily harm, and one count of driver failing to report an incident occasioning death or grievous bodily harm. He is due to appear in court again on November 13 for a committal mention, having his bail extended until then. Speaking to the Broome Advertiser the day of the incident, a witness of the alleged event said they saw the alleged victim purposely running in front of oncoming traffic around 15 minutes before the hit-and-run allegedly took place. “Last night (a man) was purposely running in front of vehicles and was already covered in blood,” they said. “He jumped in front of my car, thankfully I slammed on the brakes and didn’t hit him.” Police blocked off Old Broome Road between Sandpiper Avenue and Lorikeet Drive while investigations took place with the road blocks being cleared later in the afternoon on July 27.
