Peninsula Bombers knock Cable Beach from perch

Cable Beach continue to fall down the rungs of the WKFL ladder as the Peninsula Bombers booked a spectacular win against last year’s premiers at the weekend. The competition was fierce as the Bombers and the Greenbacks went head to head at Father McMahon Oval on Saturday afternoon. Atypically Cable Beach was behind after the first quarter despite Sonny Dann kicking the first goal of the day, with three goals from the Bombers cementing their lead. Dane Victor scored the first and only goal in the second quarter for the Bombers as the match turned to a stalemate. Cable Beach had several opportunities but couldn’t translate them into goals, collecting three behinds instead, 4.2 (26) to 4.5 (29). Three goals from Cable Beach in the opening of the third quarter saw last year’s premiers sneak back into an uneasy five-point lead but the Bombers weren’t going to let the match slip from their grasp with Edward McGinty bringing the Bombers back into the green with two late goals. It was a fierce battle in the last term, with both sides failing to make their opportunities count as defence mounted the pressure. Dann received a yellow card late in the final term, before Riley Oldfield kicked the last of the day for Cable Beach just before the final siren. But it wasn’t enough to rein in the Bombers lead, and they won 8.7 (55) to 5.8 (38). The Bombers’ McGinty lead the scoring for the match with three goals followed by fellow Bomber Dane Victor with two and Cable Beach’s Oldfield also on two. Elsewhere, top of the ladder team Broome Towns took down the Derby Tigers with a margin just shy of 100 points on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers struggled to get into the game before the end of the first half as Towns made the most of the Tigers’ troubles, launching themselves into a 52-point lead by the long break. The Tigers kicked three in the third term to double their score. But it was nowhere near enough to stop the onslaught of goals from Towns who continued to add to their substantial lead to take an easy win, 20.11 (131) to 6.4 (40). The Looma Eagles also continued their winning streak, taking down the Bidyadanga Emus on Saturday afternoon. The Emus looked as though they might have what it takes to bring down the Eagles with a nine-point margin between the sides at quarter-time. But the Eagles quickly proved why they are second on the ladder, eventually defeating the Emus by 42 points, 14.15 (99) to 8.9 (57). It was a similar story between the Broome Saints and the Broome Bulls as the teams clashed on Saturday afternoon. By half-time the Bulls had more than doubled the score of the Saints, who continued to struggle to match the Bulls pace, handing them an easy win 15.9 (99) to 10.2 (62). Broome Bulls’ Jason Hemphill led the scoring for the match on six goals followed by Blake Rowlinson with five.
