People are urged to act immediately to survive as a bushfire continues to rage through Derby and Mowanjum remote community this morning.

Lives and homes are under serious threat in the area, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services has confirmed.

People are urged to act immediately to survive with homes on Third, Fourth and Fifteenth Streets currently under threat by fire.

It is too late to leave homes. Residents are urged to find a room in their homes with running water and a clear exit, to shelter from the approaching fire.

Extreme heat from the fire will kill before flames reaches homes, DFES warned, so residents must shelter in place.

If homes catch fire and conditions inside the home become unbearable, residents are urged to move to an area that has already been burnt.

Firefighters are currently fighting the fire and and are also conducting asset protection around properties in Mowanjum community.

As of 10.43am on September 10 the fire is still raging, unpredictable and out of control according to DFES with a Bushfire Emergency Warning still in place for people between Derby Highway, Lovegrove Street and Bungarun Road, including the Mowanjum Community and Hamlet Grove in Derby.
