Old Girls claim premiership
A fierce battle has seen Old Girls rise above Djugun Flames to win the Broome Netball Association 2019 division one premiership.
It was do-or-die in a semifinal rematch as rivals Old Girls and Djugun Flames went toe-to-toe in the climax of the 2019 netball season on Friday.
Prior to the match-up, Old Girls had defeated the Flames by 10 points to advance to the grand final during the semifinals.
However, the Flames fought hard for their rematch after defeating Towns by six points in the preliminary final on Tuesday.
Both teams brought the fire and intensity from the outset, with Flames building the early lead only to be matched by Old Girls later in the opening quarter.
However, the Flames managed to hold on to lead 12-10 at quarter time as the pressure mounted.
The intense contest continued into the second quarter, although the Old Girls stepped up their attack to take the lead, scoring 13 goals to three for the quarter to lead 23-15 at the main break.
Early scoring attempts gave the Flames a glimpse of hope for a comeback during the third quarter, although the Old Girls began to fight hard to hold on to their lead.
As both teams showed aggression on court in their determination to win, the Flames managed to take a narrow lead late in the term to go into the final change 26-25.
The fierce battle continued into the final term, with the Old Girls beginning to pull away once again.
Although the Flames fought hard to the end, the Old Girls walked away with the premiership trophy 37-31. Old Girls’ Rebecca Boni was named best on court for her strong showing in goal defence throughout the match.
Elsewhere, Broomies defeated Broome Bulls to win t the division two grand final 21-20, with Broomies’ Elainah Coffin named best on court.
Cable Beach fought off Nyx to win the division three grand final 35-32 with Kaupa Pitt named best on court. In the junior competitions, Pindan Tigers defeated Cable Beach in the 12/U grand final 24-23, with Tigers’ Imogen John named best on court. Broome Girls Academy beat Stingrays in the 14/U grand final 36-35 in extra time with BGA’s Jahkya Shadforth the best on court, and Djugun Flames defeated Djugun Flames Diamonds in the 16/U grand final 43-29 with Flames’ Paris Millar named best on court.
