New Broome Senior High School leaders up for the challenge ahead of COVID uncertainty

Broome Senior High School’s new head students say they are determined to make this year as normal as possible as the town faces its first COVID-19 threat in two years. Jordan Binns and Airlie Eastwood were elected as the school’s new head boy and girl late last year. Despite questions surrounding how the pandemic may impact schooling, Jordan still wants students to feel confident in their education. “It’s about everyone in the school having an active role in change so that they’re confident in what the school provides,” he said. “For me, the big thing is everyone having a voice and if they have something they want to change, making it easy for them.” Airlie said part of being a leader was making people feel they could help instigate change. “I would love to see people being able to step up to us and talk about changes they would like to see,” she said. “It’s not just Jordan and I but the whole school community that can make improvements.” Airlie said one such improvement could be education about different cultures. “I think equality is such a big thing, especially for a town like Broome where you have a lot of diversity. I’d love to help everybody understand the importance of accepting and understanding culture,” she said. “I think it’s important to educate people on cultural backgrounds so that they may understand it more when they go into the real world.” Broome Senior High School principal Mathew Burt said he was confident in the new leaders and saw them as role models for not only the school but the entire Broome community. “I’m very proud of the students that we have here at Broome Senior High School: their maturity, their leadership and their ability to provide a great platform for the students coming through,” he said.
