Broome residents and visitors will soon be able to enjoy the town’s new state-of-the-art skate park, with construction on the $1.5m facility due to commence next month.

Jointly funded between the Shire of Broome and Lotterywest, the skate park will feature a large bowl structure, as well as a ‘street’ section with rails, ledges and quarter pipes.

Award-winning skate park designers Convic, who have designed parks across Australia and the world, were selected to lead the project, with local sub-contractors undertaking the construction.

Over 200 submissions were received to shape the park’s design, with 50 per cent coming from people 22 old years or younger.

Shire of Broome President Harold Tracey said the new skate park would be an amazing addition for Broome’s youth and sporting community.

“Providing excellent sporting infrastructure and youth services are a priority for the Shire and we have invested heavily in this space over recent years,” he said.

“Having a new top-notch skate park will be another facility that the Broome community can be proud of and it will be fantastic to see our youth making it their own.”

Flying to Broome to hand a Lotterywest owned cheque to the Shire in September 2021, WA Premier Mark McGowan said the park would cater for all skill levels and help keep youth fit and healthy.

“With skateboarding now in the Olympics, it would be great to see Broome produce an Olympic skateboarding champion,” he said.

The park is due to be completed in mid-2022.
