Bidyadanga musician John Bennett’s musical dedication to the memory of his brother has swept the pool at the 2018 WAM Song of the Year Awards.

The award ceremony took place at the Fly By Night Club in Fremantle on May 16 and saw Bennett take out the outstanding indigenous and outstanding regional awards for the title track from his second album, Country is Calling.

Not only was Bennett one of two artists who won multiple awards — the other being Perth-based musician Stella Donnelly — he was the only artist to be nominated for three of the night’s awards — outstanding indigenous, outstanding regional and country.

“My music is who I am,” Bennett said. “It is about my country, my people and my life.”
