Basketball fever hit Broome last week as fanatics of all ages hit the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre basketball courts for two days of action during the senior and junior school holiday basketball carnivals. Basketballers of all ages could be seen tearing up the court during the October 3-8 event as they fought to take home divisional grand final wins. In the senior carnival the Derby Tigers brought home the win in the men’s division-one grand final, taking down the Broome Tigers 44-20. Kelwin Unghango was named MVP for the grand final while Zimmarley Wilson claimed the runner-up MVP title. Edward McGinty from the Bardi Magics was named the men’s division-one overall MVP and Mario Rex from the Drifters was the runner-up. In the senior women’s grand final, No Limits came out on top against the Pacers, winning 23-18. Patricia Graham received the MVP award for the Pacers, and Jacinta Friel of No Limits was recognised as the runner-up. The MP Boyz emerged victorious after taking down the Yaloon Sharks 22-20 in the division-two grand final. Damon Enosa was named the most valuable player for his standout performance in the grand final, while Logan Umbagai was the runner-up. In the women’s division, Le’laine Shovellor from the Taizers claimed the MVP trophy, while Friel from No Limits took home the runner-up MVP title. Broome Tigers’ Jaikie Hastie was named runner-up MVP in the division-two men’s competition, while Trevor Menmuir Jr from the Kings was the overall MVP. In the junior carnival, the Hornets won both the U18s boys’ and girls’ grand finals. The Hornets boys’ team took down the Hedland Bulls by just three points to take home the grand final win, 27-24 while the Hornets girls’ team took down Binar by two points to claim the grand final win, 15-13.
